Authorized Economic Operator (AEO): Security, Trust and Advantages in the International Logistics Chain
In an increasingly demanding global environment in terms of security and regulatory compliance, the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) has established itself as a standard of reference for companies that are part of the international supply chain.
The AEO status was created as part of the initiatives launched after the 9/11 attacks and has been developed in the European Union since 2005, with the aim of strengthening security in international trade and harmonizing customs risk management.
Since 2008, companies established in the EU can apply for this certificate, which is recognized by all customs authorities in the Member States.
What is the AEO?
The Authorized Economic Operator is a trusted economic operator that, in the exercise of its professional activity, carries out operations regulated by customs regulations and meets a series of requirements in terms of compliance, solvency, administrative management and, where appropriate, security.
Being AEO is not mandatory, but it represents a clear competitive advantage for manufacturers, exporters, importers, freight forwarders, carriers, customs representatives and warehousing agents involved in the international logistics chain.
Types of AEO certificates
There are three modalities:
- AEO Customs Simplifications (AEOC)
- AEO Security and Safety (AEOS)
- AEOE Simplifications and Security (AEOF)
Each has different requirements and specific benefits, allowing companies to tailor certification to their business model.
Advantages of the AEO certificate
The main benefits include:
- Reduced physical and documentary controls.
- Priority in case of inspection.
- Possibility to choose the place of customs control.
- More agile access to customs simplifications.
- Prior notification in certain security controls.
- Reduction of data in summary declarations (according to modality).
In addition to these direct advantages, the AEO brings strategic benefits such as improved traceability, strengthened internal control systems, increased confidence on the part of customers and suppliers, and growing international recognition thanks to the mutual recognition agreements promoted within the framework of the World Customs Organization.
An ongoing commitment
At Vicasso International, as a company subject to AEO regulations, we understand this certification not only as a requirement, but also as a commitment to excellence, safety and trust in every logistics operation.
Our company was one of the first 10 companies in Spain to obtain AEO certification in its three modalities: AEO Customs Simplifications (AEOC), AEO Safety and Security (AEOS) and AEO Simplifications and Security (AEOF), reflecting our early commitment to quality, safety and maximum regulatory compliance.
We also assist our clients in the process of obtaining the AEO certificate in case they are interested, accompanying and advising them in each phase of the procedure. Betting on the AEO is betting on a more agile, secure and efficient international trade.
